Shri Biju S R, Outstanding Scientist

Shri Biju S R, Outstanding Scientist, assumed charge of Director, HSFC on August 31, 2026. Before taking over as Director, HSFC he was Director[Projects], VSSC from July 1, 2026, with additional responsibilities of Programme Director, Gaganyaan.

He graduated with a  B.Tech  in Computer Science & Engineering from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET) in 1989. He officially joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in 1991 and subsequently completed his ME in Computer Science & Engineering from Indian Institute of Science. Upon joining Launch Vehicle Integration Group, VSSC he was actively involved in realization of checkout systems for operational launch vehicles and launch campaign activities at SDSC SHAR.

He held various important positions including  Associate Director (Projects), Deputy Director, Avionics (AVN) Entity, Deputy Director, Electronic System & Actuators [ESA] Entity, Project Director, PSLV Project, Associate Project Director [Mission & Avionics], PSLV Project and  Deputy Project Director [Avionics], PSLV Project. He has also served as Mission Director for 13 missions of PSLV, including RISAT 2B Series and Aditya-L1 Mission.

During his tenure as PD, PSLV the concept of PSLV as a stabilized orbital platform (POEM) for conducting space borne short duration experiments was conceived and successfully accomplished and also effort towards productionisation of PSLV Launch vehicle through industry was persued actively and five missions of PSLV N1-N5 were awarded to industry consortium. He contributed significantly towards development of onboard Avionics System in quad configuration for Gaganyaan Mission. 

He has won several Awards including Astronautical Society of India (ASI) Award, VANGUARD Outstanding Intrapreneurial Excellence Award-2024, ISRO TEAM EXCELLENCE AWARD-2008, ISRO TEAM EXCELLENCE AWARD-2010.
